Away in a manger

Traditional lyrics (anon.) are in italics. These Lyrics were written by Members of Wakefield Baptist Church  29/12/2019

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head;
The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay;
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes,
The little Lord Jesus, what crying He makes:
I love You, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky
And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

You shepherds who are fearful, rejoice on this day
A new king is born here, who lays in the hay
He brings you good tidings, and opens the door
To salvation, rejoicing and life evermore

The wise men are praising, then an angel appeared
Go now to Egypt, till the danger has cleared
O hush now Lord Jesus, as you flee from this land
The Lord keeps you safe, in the palm of His hand

The wise men have gone home, the family flees
In danger and trouble, become refugees
To Egypt, or Calais, or countries afar
Lord Jesus is with us, our bright morning star

There are many people, who follow today
And can find it hard, to go on your way
Give them your comfort, to keep them up high
Then they’ll sing in heaven, and live in the sky

Remember the baby who was born into strife
Who was gathered and hunted at the start of his life
He was taken to exile and hidden from fear
Yet he used his whole lifetime to gather us near

Be near me, Lord Jesus: I ask You to stay
Close by me forever and love me, I pray;
Bless all the dear children in Your tender care,
And fit us for heaven to live with You there.
